Plymouth fencer Corinna Lawrence takes heart from Baku progress

2015-06-24

Plymouth’s Corinna Lawrence and Truro’s James Honeybone have both set their sights on next month’s fencing World Championships in Russia, after their last-16 stage exits from the European Games in Azerbaijan on Tuesday.

Lawrence got the Great Britain campaign going on the first day of fencing action in the women’s epée and picked up three wins from her six pool matches to secure progress to the final 32 in Baku.

At that stage, Lawrence, who competed for Team GB at the London Olympic Games in 2012, dismissed Romania’s Amalia Tataran, but the Plymouth Fencing Club stalwart then came unstuck against Italy’s Giulia Rizzi, who edged a tight affair 15-12.

Looking back I, fenced really well today. There have been a couple of points where technically I could have been a little bit better,” the former Plymouth High School for Girls student said. “But I’m pretty sharp and I’m looking forward to going to the World Championships in a few weeks [in Moscow from July 13 to 19], and this is a good warm-up for that.”
