Four-day long tournament ends with women’s sabre competition

RICHMOND, Va.; October 12, 2015 – The Penn State fencing team competed this afternoon in its final bout of the Richmond North American Cup. The four-day long competition concluded today with the women’s sabre event.

 

Sophomore Kathryn Charpin (Setauket, N.Y.) was the highest placing Penn State fencer today, ending the afternoon in 24th place. Charpin advanced past the preliminary pool to the third round, where she was edged by fellow Big Ten fencer Celina Merza of Ohio State University.

 

In her first appearance as a Nittany Lion, freshman Deana Oliver (Montclair, N.J.) performed admirably, finishing the competition in 54th place.

 

Junior Teodora Kakhiani (Tbilisi, Georgia) and freshman Erin McLoughlin (San Jose, Costa Rica) did not advance past the preliminary pool.

 

The fencing team will return home this weekend to host the Nittany Lion Cup at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17 and Sunday, Oct. 18 in the White Building.
